RE: Anyone got an adult child living at home?

Yeah, I told him he was free to go live with MeeMaw anytime he wanted! LOL
But he won't cos she drives him crazy and I have pointed that out to him that her way of life is dysfunctional. So he knows in his heart that he needs to grow up and be responsible for his life...just figure he is pushing the envelope once again with me.
AAhhh the excitement of being a parent...glad I only had one! LOL:B

RE: Anyone got an adult child living at home?

Thanks to all that replied! I guess I needed some "parental" feedback. I come from a VERY dysfunctional family of origin and so I'm breaking new ground here.....in raising my child to where he is now is the opposite of what my parents did with me.....my mother has my 44 year old brother/her son, living with her. My son sees that arrangement and then questions why I'm being "mean" to him...he just doesn't "get it" quite yet but eventually I hope that he will grow up and look back and appreciate learning how to be independent and responsible. Time will tell. Thanks for the feedback tho from everyone! Interesting responses...I'll keep charging rent and they can move if they don't like it but I'm not being adversarial about it - they are pouting but I just ignore it and smile and go about my life happily.

RE: Oh the Pain: Bibliophile must let go. Share Your Pain.

My boss found a cheaper solution to the Kindle...he bought an older model tablet pc and gets the books for free online...if anyone is interested I can get the finer details from him but he compared both and he is the ultimate tightwad.

Anyone got an adult child living at home?

I'm just curious if anyone has or has had an adult child living at home? My only child - 24, moved home last summer; he had gotten out of the Navy, had no job etc. so I told him he could live with us, pay rent when he got a job and move later in the year.
He got a min wage job immediately while applying for better positions. Some months he could pay me and a few he couldn't cos of his bills etc.
In Dec 07 he landed a nice paying job. His wife was also in the Navy and came here in Feb - also jobless. He has been paying the same rent - not much at all but still the same paying what we agreed upon last summer. Now his wife has a good paying job too and all of a sudden he thinks we are bad parents for expecting him/them to pay rent...He tells me he knows of plenty of his friends that live with their parents for a while and pay no rent and not expected to pay. Granted they want to buy their own house but he agreed to pay rent last summer.
I just told him to go live with his friends and their families cos I expect him to be a responsible adult and pay his way. Jeesh, he is only paying me $250 a month total...which is dirt cheap in Austin cos we have the highest cost of living in the entire state of Texas!
Am I being a bad parent? What is the norm? I always paid my mom whenever I had to live with her and I was working full time. She never asked me to pay while I was going to school full time and working part time. Where does this sense of entitlement come from??
I'm baffled and it is causing a huge rift in the family...

RE: swimming pool maintenance....

We have used this stuff for the past 3 years and it truly is magic for us! We use it once a week all year and our pool stays healthy and clear...amazing stuff...your pool can be green and within 30 mins - 1 hour it's sparkling again...we have trees near and over the pool so we were fighting a constant battle of green water...
we have no interest in this company but love the product a lot!

RE: greeting cards

My suggestion - find a local arts/craft store, go in and talk to the managers etc. Those folks would love to make you a handmade card for a few bucks - and you can pick out what you want to say in it or write your own words.
One of my best friends does this all the time for co-workers etc.
From wedding invitations, graduation invitations, Father's Day cards etc.
The fee is usually less than some of those stupid cards you find in the store..depends on how fancy a card you choose but give it a try.
In Texas there seems to be Scrapbooking, arts/crafts, Michael's stores all over the place. Take a look around in your city...

RE: They canceled my credit card

Can someone tell me the logic behind signing the back of your credit card? What is it the vendor is comparing the signature to??
Signatures can be forged easily when you see the small box that you are
given to use as a siggie box. I can never make my siggie look like
what I normally use to sign with...so how is my sloppy writing proving who I really am? Most vendors compare the name on the card with what is on my driver's license - which has my actual picture on it...that seems to prove who I am...not a scribbled name...
What am I missing here? I just don't follow the logic so someone please tell me. Thanks

RE: Bio fuel

We've been running on bio diesel for the last 6 months. It's a blend of soybean and diesel. Been getting it for $3.00 a gallon until last week the provider for soybean decided to gouge the guy making the bio. So the guy stopped making it until he can find another soy provider.
Sucks...there was a kit on Craigs list the other week for $1200 for making your own bio-d. We are seriously considering it now.
This is ridiculous to pay almost $4.00 for diesel now.
Actually our engine (2005 Dodge 2500 Ram) runs better on the bio than regular diesel. Smells like french frys when we fill up! LOL
Burns cleaner too..now I can't "poof" the tailgater with black smoke now! LOL

RE: They canceled my credit card

When I receive a credit card/debit card etc. I always do the following:
turn it over and in dark bold ink/fine line magic marker - I print the following in big letters:
ASK FOR PHOTO ID
Then if I have room left over I will sign my siggie underneath
but usually I leave the siggie off...what does that siggie prove anyway? I've had many cashiers tell me that they love that idea and they are going to implement it on their own cards! I'm still amazed at how few cashiers ask for ID proof!
The only time I've gotten grief over it was at a little Radio Shack. They would not allow me to use it unless my siggie was on it..
was adamant...so to spite them I signed it using their
goofy pen, they ran the card and I then proceeded to wipe off
the siggie (they had a lousy felt tip pin) and showed them
that my card was back to its previous state. They looked incredibly stupid at that point. Then I had them reverse the charge and I told them I would take my business elsewhere. I had time to kill that day or I would have just walked away with their first comment...

RE: Beware of private park in Bastrop, Texas

Our group returned only because the owner did not state there was a problem until it was too late for the group to find another camp ground.
When the leader of our group contacted the cg for reservations he indicated nothing was wrong - 6 months ago. Then 2 months ago she called to finalize things and he started telling her that there were demerits on her file!
Do you know how hard it is to find a cg for 27 rigs on an Easter weekend that close to the actual holiday? Joe should have told her 6 months ago that he had issues with her group coming. We would have gone somewhere else - and we will do just that. But for this guy to be so rude to newcomers too was a surprise.
Maybe he was having a bad weekend - oh well he just lost a lot of potential income from having a bad day/weekend.
I just realized that Woodalls posted my message twice. Apologies to all.

RE: Beware of private park in Bastrop, Texas

My husband checked us in for the day - we paid $4.00 per person to be onsite. Ok fine. Hubby pointed out that their website said $3.00 pp and Joe the owner gruffly that was outdated. The new rate was $4.00 Then Joe practically threw all of these sheets of paper across the desk, told him to fill out every detail or no entrance. Fine. Shoved a packet of rules at him, and told him to sign it without giving him time to read it and then snatched it back before he could finish it. Took over 25 mins to just check in for the day. That is how much information they were requesting etc.
Then we get into the park to visit our friends - 27 couples/rigs are involved. All of them were upset at the rudeness of this owner. All of them will be posting later this week on rv park review. Our particular group maintains strict adherence to guidelines and this includes cleaning up after themselves etc. and we always leave the campground cleaner than we found it.
There were many, many unhappy campers and so they too will post. But we were surprised at such rude behavior from a camp ground owner.
Definitely not a warm Texas hospitality received upon check-in that is for sure. Our camping group comprises over 125 members (rigs) and we have great references from other camp ground owners so we do have other camping resources that we will use. But it would be unfair to other campers to not share the experiences of this journey.
See y'all down the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beware of private park in Bastrop, Texas

We visited friends staying at Bastrop River RV Park last week. Just a word of warning to those considering staying there.
The owner of the place is an extremely rude little man to all guests - seems to be his style when we talked with various other campers there too. (maybe he has "little man syndrome? hahaha) So it was not just our encounter. Then we heard from other campers that this guy logs everything into a database about you and your site and when you return for future visits then he digs out his info and
tends to berate you and accuse you of things that you did on the last visit. If these campers that told me these stories were strangers then I might not believe them but they are very trust worthy individuals.
One couple spent an hour just checking into the park cos the last time they were there in 2004 it seems they put down the wrong zip code (reversed two numbers) in their address on their park application and that they left
a cigarette butt on the ground at their site - they don't even smoke!!! So before you leave said campground you better ask for a site inspection as you might get an unpleasant surprise the next time you visit them. Owner tracks everything for years and you get "demerits" on your file for breaking rules. The owner was incredibly rude to them about their address error and accused them of being dishonest with the park. How weird is that one? Another couple told of a story by a neighbor in the park - not part of our group of friends tho. The neighboring site said they do not have a dog, woke up the next morning to find a yellow sheet of paper taped to their door saying they had left dog poop on their patch of lawn at their site and they were being fined $25.
When they protested the owner said too bad as it was on their site and it was their responsibility to pick up whatever they saw - they said they didn't see it when they went inside for the night. They were pretty ticked off and not sure if they could cancel the charge to their credit card.
So in addition to having a Nazi mentality, the park is next to an incredibly busy, noisy freeway. The afternoon/early evening that we spent there we heard at least 5 ambulances scream down the freeway. Friends said this went on all night long.
If peace and quiet is what you seek then look elsewhere.
The place is always full but that could be folks just needing an overnight place to park - from the road it looks like a really nice welcoming park - gated, landscaped etc. but the owner has ruined any chance of us, our friends, and our family of ever going back there.
We were considering a huge family/friend rally there until this experience. We will not consider this park for any visits EVER!
There are way too many other great private parks that welcome visitors warmly to put up with ugliness from an owner and his staff ( who are just as rude as he is).
I cannot imagine how in he world he got on the good list at Good Sam's with the history of ugliness he dishes out to folks.
So beware of Bastrop River RV Park in Bastrop, Texas - on Highway 71 at the river.
'Nuff said even tho I'd love to say more as we and our friends were fairly "hot" about the treatment!
Cheers!

RE: Internet puchases and state sales tax

Would this universal tax be similar to the VAT in the UK? Value Added Tax? It's been a while since I was last there but at the time the VAT was up to 17% - wow what a tax! And because the vendors did not show the breakdown of the taxes on the items, no one really knew the true cost of their items. What a great govt scam eh?
